We’ve just learned of a contest that’s been going on since 1995 for students from K-12th grades and we had to share it with you. The River of Words contest celebrates National Poetry Month and Earth Day, and is the largest youth poetry and art competition in the WORLD.
This project is intended to educate teachers around the world on how to incorporate nature exploration, science, and the arts into their work with young people. Brilliant!
River of Words is a completely free competition that inspires our youth to think about our watersheds in our local environments, and then translate what they’ve recognized into creative expressions, like poems and paintings. Students can enter as many times as they’d like, but will use a separate entry form for each submission.
Deadline for entries is December 1, 2012 for the 2013 competition, so we wanted you to have plenty of time to tell your teachers, 4-H or scout troop. You can enter individually, or as a group – how great is that?
There are eight grand prize winners – four in poetry and four in art, in four age categories from the US entries. An international prize is also awarded to a student from outside the United States. Winners are announced in April 2013 and honored in two spring ceremonies at the San Fransisco Public Library and the Library of Congress. Grand prize is round-trip transportation from the winner’s nearest major airport to San Fransisco for the winner and one parent or guardian.
Students, teachers, and group leaders – follow this link to learn more specifics and download the applications you’ll need to get started. Tell us about your project on Facebook, we can’t wait to hear how this contest inspired your students to think about our watersheds!
