My last post about how to use a garbage disposal suggested running lots of cold water after use to help prevent drains from clogging up.
If you check several different sources you will get several different opinions. We had different opinions from our own plumbers. They asked would you prefer your clog close to the sink – or further down the line?
Cold or Hot?
I doubt that I will change anyone’s mind today, but I had my own experience with a stopped-up, double kitchen sink this last weekend. And now I’ve changed my mind, and want to change the tip I gave you from “cold” to “hot.”
My experience: It worked to put the disposal cover over the drain opening in the other side of the sink, opposite of the disposal. Then I filled the sink with hot water and pushed the cover off so all the hot water could attack the clog. At first it seeped out very slowly, just as the original water did. But with patience and a couple more fills of hot water, voila – a glug glug and everything was free and back to normal.
I know that won’t work for every clogged sink drain. I was pretty sure that mine was an accumulation of coconut oil, due to a lovely teenage girl that wants long gorgeous hair and the prescription for the day is – coconut oil!
It really does a great job and I won’t discourage it. She’s very special.
Coconut Oil and Drains Don’t Mix
So if you have one of these girls or use the oil yourself, be very careful to wipe out the leftover product with a paper towel and toss it in the trash before rinsing in the sink. And lots of hot water down the drain on a regular basis might save you a clog. But if you need help please call 972-424-6479 and one of our super plumbers will be there in a jiffy to get your drains working again.
