MEMORIAL DAY IS MAY 25, 2015
Are you planning something special with your family? People usually have picnics and BBQs and consider this day the first of summer vacation season. I think that is just great and plan to do that myself with my family.
We don’t want to lose sight of the reason we have this celebration/observance though and it can be a great teaching experience for the younger generation that may not have been taught or have not comprehended the significance of the day we set aside.
I am giving you a link to History.com that provides background to Memorial Day, previously called Decoration Day with videos and I found it very interesting. You might want to take some time to check it out: http://www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history#
Displaying the flag at half staff on MEMORIAL DAY
On Memorial Day the flag is flown at half-staff only until NOON. The proper sequence for displaying the flag on this holiday we have set aside to remember the more than one million men and women who have died in defense of our Nation is:
In the morning the flag should be attached to the halyard and raised briskly to the top of the flag pole, then slowly lowered to the mid-way point of the pole.
At noon the flag should be raised to the top of the flag pole.
At the end of the day the flag should be slowly and ceremoniously lowered and removed.
We honor our Veterans and Military serving us now, and also the men and women on our police force that fight daily to keep our streets free of crime.
